What Is It
Web Tortoise is a collection of posts about the many ways to analyze website’s various Availability and Performance data (jump to the main page). Will slant toward using excel to get additional value from charting data, be them from third parties, first parties or both. While there may be a slant in the Web Tortoise posts, they should all be considered as part of a larger Web Performance Optimization [ #WPO ] Program.
Availability Versus Performance
The ITIL Version 3 definition of Availability is:
Ability of a Configuration Item or IT Service to perform its agreed function when required
The ITIL Version 3 definition of Performance is:
A measure of what is achieved or delivered by a system, person, team, process, or IT Service
In Web Tortoise World, it goes something like this:
Availability asks, “Was the website available”?
Performance asks, “If the website was available, how long did it take to download”?
Other Illustrative Examples:
Availability asks, “Was the coffee shop open”?
Performance asks, “If the coffee shop was open, how long did I have to wait in line”?
Availability asks, “Did you make it to work this morning”?
Performance asks, “If you made it to work this morning, how long was the drive”?
